Photograph of Bernard Grunberg shortly before leaving for a bicyle trip in Holland, in 1936. This picture is part of the Bernard Grunberg Collection, it was taken in 1936. It shows Bernard, who is on the right, with four Jewish boys who lived in the town. The picture was taken shortly before the boys left for a bicycle trip in Holland. The children who went on the bicycle trip were all Jewish boys from Nazi Germany. The tour went along the German-Dutch border, on the Dutch side, and whilst the children were there they met up with a group of Dutch Scouts. Speaking of the trip in 2016, Bernard says: ‘I think the idea was to give you a change from the political city, and take you away from that. I mean at that time Jewish boys were isolated in a way that they would not be in contact with any non-Jewish boys at all. None of the boys would even attempt to be friendly with you, because of the constant anti-Jewish propaganda’.
